News from Celia and Katrin.

September 1998

On 20th August, Mad Dai brought 5 greyhound bitches from Mallorca, whom we call the 5 Mallorquinas. Considering their background, their physical state was not too bad, in fact they were fat, but their eyes told a different story. Now after four weeks, they run about and play, celebrating their new lease of life. We think two of them had possibly been used for breeding.

Two weeks ago, we extended our green paddock area, having fenced off a further 1.6 hectares; now the dogs can run, in groups, over the huge field every day.

Christian, an old ‘doggy’ friend of ours of many years has joined us. He helps us with the dogs and works as a decorator and handyman which is of great help to us. He has adopted Nacional and of course she sleeps with him!

We thank you for allowing us this slot in the newsletter and for the generosity and selflessness of those who help us in the adoption programme. We are particularly touched by the support from our English friends who love and trust us without even having met us.

We list our dogs as follows:

We mourn the passing on 28th August of Yama. She is badly missed by us and by the other dogs. She did at least have nine months of bliss after her misery in Barcelona.

The ‘Diana Six’, the ‘Sweet Sixteen’ and ‘Mad Dai’s Five’

Bastia – black; Her adoptive parents will take her in six months when their new house is built. They visit regularly with their sloughi.

Rumpledora, Geraldine, Cursa, Puppy, Nacional & Emma have to be homed.

Dancer – lost her home due to family illness. She still lives up to her name!

Zoey – is very arthritic but has benefited from a bioflow collar from Sonia and new tablets from the vet. Now in contrast to before when she would not leave her kennel, we cannot get her to come back to her kennel!

Astra and Pet Robin – are very quite and angelic.

Ave Negra – still looks fantastic despite her chronic kidney disease.

Speedy – is learning from the others how to torment yorkies.

Sila – behaves like an angel when Celia is there but is as naughty as the others with the yorkies when Celia is out of sight.

Tea – Chief tormentor!

Humada – Still Katrin’s favourite. Good with all the tribe.

Zaira – Rather shy but getting used to being fussed.

Avia – Very affectionate.

Cloneen Again – The bald patches on her skin are covered completely now with a new coat.

The Five Mallorquinas arrived 20th August.

Barakalda – black; corrupted earmark; probably born 1990. She was the saddest of the 13 but has perked up tremendously and runs about as happily as the others.

Zunilda – fawn; corrupted earmark. She is the most active of the 5 and could be the oldest. She is so different from the day she arrived when she was miserable with aches and pains.

La Fuentes – born 1991; white and fawn. Runs all over the field; wonderful with the little children who visited; she lay her head on the two year old child.

Joker Style – black brindle; born 1990. Clings to you and wants to be touched all the time; very bossy with La Fuentes (probably jealous).

Sandpicker – white and black; born 1991. Digs holes and jumps in and out of them like a clown!

With best wishes to you all from Celia Holmgren and Katrin Görner.
